- Celebrating Diversity in 2011’s Chinese New Year
I’ve a really nice quote from mate of mine: Raka. He posted this couple days ago, but the inspiration still remains in my mind. In this celebration of Chinese New Year, I’d love to share the power of diversity with this quote. Please read this:
“Your car is Japanese. Your Vodka is Russian. Your pizza is Italian.
Your kebab is Turkish. Your democracy is Greek. Your coffee is Brazilian.
Your movies are American. Your oil is Saudi Arabian. Your electronics are Chinese.
Your numbers – Arabic, your letters – Latin.
And you complain that your neighbor is an immigrant? Pull yourself together!”
Got the message? Let me say something to you…
You may be genuinely proud of ethnic group You’re originally from, Java, Celebes, Papua, China, or India
You may be genuinely proud when you meet someone whose family name is similar with yours,
You may find your own culture, heritage, and tradition most appealing and be so obsessed with it,
But I tell you, the greatest thing ever in this world is: looking around and finding how diverse our society really is. When you start to embrace diversity, you do start to enrich your own live!
Being disrespectful to any other kinds of difference does mean sowing the seeds of prejudice and intolerance on this earth and lossing the essence of life. If you do so and think that you’re throwing, honestly you’re thrown.
I’m not Chinese-descendant, but I’m as joyous as those who celebrate Chinese New Year today. With my heartfelt pleasure, I congratulate all of you for this special momentum. Happy Chinese New Year!
Salam,
